General File Preparation

Prepare your Images
  • Your final printed image quality is depending on the following quality factors:
    • Quality of scanner
      • Drum scanners has much greater capabilities in terms of color accuracy, clarity, dynamic range and optical resolution compare to most flatbed scanners.
    • Quality of photography
    • Type of original
      • Best with color transparencies
    • Size of original
      • 4 x 5 transparency gives you much higher details compare to slides
    • The scanning resolution
      • This is the resolution refers to the image resolution needed for the output
  • Image Resolution (DPI) is recommended at 100 ~ 250 dpi depending on the viewing distance and printed size. Smaller image will need higher resolution because normal viewing distance is usually close up, clearly sees the detail of the image; larger images will need lower resolution because normal viewing distance is usually far away, the printed dots visually become smaller, and in many projects, the filesize could easily reach several hundred megabytes depending on the final image size. The resolution calculator can help you to find out the proper resolution for your image, and also show you the examples of images printed at different resolution. See resolution calculator.
  • All scan images should be CMYK. No RGB, monotone, duotone or indexed colors.
  • If you have an image file with size smaller than you needed but resoution is higher than recommended, you may change the image size in PhotoShop with Resample Image option unchecked to get a larger image with lower resolution. This will maintain the original scan quality without resampling the file and the filesize should stay the same.
  • You should not resample your image using software, such as changing resolution in Image Size in PhotoShop with Resample Image option checked. Your image will become blurred.
  • Normally, filesize (MB) can be used to determine the quality of printed image. The larger the file, the higher the detail and quality of the image, however, this filesize cannot be achieved by using software to enlarge the filesize, it should be obtain from the original scan.
Prepare your Document
  • Page layout programs are highly recommended for final document layout.
  • Using paint or photo retouching programs such as PhotoShop for layout is NOT recommended. Your text resolution will dependent on image resolution.
  • If your program does not support the final print size, create your document at 50% or 25%.
  • If your document has bleeds, you must extended the bleed objects beyond the edge of your document for trimming purpose
Check your Links
  • Make sure all imported images and graphics in your document are linked and updated. Out of date links may look different when updated at final output.
Include all Fonts used
  • Both screen and printer fonts is required for Type I fonts. True Type fonts has only one file per typeface.
Collect all associated files
  • Make sure all linked files and fonts are included in the disk you are sending. If you prefer to upload your file, you must compress (ZIP or Stuff) all associated files into one single file before upload.

Recommended Image Resolution Calculator

Calculate image resolution for large format output

Enter your image size and viewing distance below to get the proper resolution and filesize for your image. Regardless of what your final image size it will be, the viewing distance is the main factor of the final perceived image sharpness.

What is the final printed size of your image? X inch
What is the normal viewing distance? feet

Viewing Distance

The 3 pictures below is the simulated quality comparison of images printed at different resolution. The dpi & mb is used for comparison purpose only. Notice if view from more than 5 feet away, the image quality looks better.

250 dpi / 100 mb 125 dpi / 25 mb 63 dpi / 6.25 mb

Pixel enlargement vs. Resampling

These two images show the difference of if images are enlarged by the printer versus resampling using PhotoShop. Notice the resampled file is 4 time the filesize compare to original file, and eventhough the edges are not pixelated, it is blurry. (simulation)

Original file printed at 100% Original file printed at 200% Resampled file printed at 100%
(250 dpi / 25 mb) (125 dpi / 25 mb) (250 dpi / 100 mb)

File Formats

Use QuarkXPress to layout your page is highly recommanded. Create your document size 25%, 50% or 100% of the final size. Do not include any unwanted border space. Please make sure all of your linked images are up to date. You should use Collect for output from the File Menu to collect all the graphics and images in your document into a separate folder. Missing files happen very often on those who collect manually. Also make sure to include all fonts, both screen and printer font. Since QuarkXPress do not embed linked graphics, You should Stuff or Zip all files, images, fonts, document file into one compressed file before upload.
If you use Illustrator for page layout, save your file in EPS format with "Include placed images" option checked. You may choose to convert all text to outline, or make sure to include all fonts used in the document. Converting text to outline will make it easier for you and us. If you embed images and convert text to outline, you will have one single file to submit.
If you submit your file in any of the PhotoShop file formats, please realize the text resolution is depend on the your image resolution. Let's say your image resolution is 200 dpi, and you want to print it on a 1200 dpi printer, the text resolution will be 200 dpi, where QuarkXPress or Illustrator will get 1200 dpi. Basically, the text in PhotoShop is treated as image. Flatten all layers and save as JPEG, EPS, or TIF format. JPEG format with Maximum Quality compression is recommeded, so you get a small file to reduce the upload time.
